Overview
Masseys was originally a gun range, before being purchased by SpaceX in 2022 to test vehicles a safe distance from the launch site. The idea being to test vehicle with interupting operations and the Launch Site. The sites first test was of B7.1, a Booster test tank.
History
After being purchased by SpaceX in 2022, the site was converted into a test site fairly quickly, with first tests later that year in June. The first flight vehicles tested at the site were S25 and B10, both undergoing cryo tests in mid-2023.
The static fire stand was completed in 2024, having the first flame trench in Starbase. The first static fire at the site was of S26 taking place in 06/2024.
At 11:01pm CDT on June 18th 2025, just over 1 year since the first static fire, S36 would experience an anomaly after a COPV failed below expected pressure. The explosion took out the Static Fire area, CH4 tank farm, and much more infrastructure nearby. Cleanup efforts would take many weeks, and the next cryo test was in late July 2025.
SpaceX would use this time to upgrade the static fire stand, both to V3 Ship, and to add protections in case of a similiar failure. The next static fire would be of S39 on 04/14/2026.
